Senior Product Development Chemist
Brighton, United Kingdom, GB – Research

This newly created role is an excellent opportunity to join our growing Research and Innovation team based in Littlehampton, West Sussex. You will be actively formulating, proposing, creating and developing new products in line with quality and safety guidelines, ensuring compliance with market launch times. You will be responsible for ensuring follow-ups are completed and monitor the use of products over time.

Key Job Accountabilities:

* Draw on your expertise in the business line to adopt a proactive stance and independently formulate and manage innovation and development projects

* Assist the manager in the operational and technical management of the laboratory (key contact for support professions external service providers, induction for new arrivals, training, etc.)

* Help compile and/or validate official documents throughout development phases

* Where required, represent the manager at meetings and on specific issues

* Provide technical support for employees on development projects

* Keep a record and ensure monitoring of development projects to which you contribute

* Provide information on internal and external projects by preparing reports and/or presentations


  • Commercially control spend within your specific remit, working creatively and in a SMART way to reduce both overall costs whilst increasing efficiency
  • To perform other related duties as assigned or requested
  • Responsible for maintaining the ethical standards of The Body Shop including minimising the environmental, health and safety risks in the workplace and responsible for reporting potential risks, real accidents and near misses to relevant managers
  • Champions, supports and participates in The Body Shop’s Values and Campaigns


  • Demonstrable experience of formulating products in a laboratory environment
  • Experience of using innovative technologies within Skincare
  • In-depth knowledge of skincare (products, development phases, lab operations, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain an overall view of operations within your business unit
  • Ability to identify, draw on and assimilate a range of information (patents, bibliographies, competition, etc.) and apply it to your activity
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrable experience in mentoring other team members
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant IT resources and software
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to build a broad network within research


  • Educated to Degree level in Chemistry / Cosmetic science or related subject desirable
